Cunard’s flagship Queen Mary 2 arrived in New York on Might 23, 2024, carrying the Everlasting Flame from the tomb of the Unknown Soldier below the Arc de Triomphe, in commemoration of the eightieth anniversary of D-Day.
A ceremony honoring the event was held onboard with dignitaries and WWII veterans. The flame was collected on Might 8 and carried by younger French ambassadors from Paris to Cherbourg, then Portsmouth, earlier than crossing the Atlantic on the Queen Mary 2. The flame will likely be laid at Arlington Cemetery on Might 24 and burn till June 6, 2024.
